Resident engagement has become a core business driver for senior living communities. It is foundational to person-centered care, especially for those living with dementia, and has been shown to be effective for decades, yet it remains the least managed side of senior living operations. This session will explore exclusive findings about the resident engagement field, best practices from leading providers and strategies for how to enable the social prescription model. Participants will understand how building team resiliency, person-centered engagement and programming not only contribute to strengthening residents’ resiliency, but also provides opportunities for older adults to enjoy active, engaged, and meaningful lives, as well as potentially delay their progression to higher levels of care. Participants will learn how to invest in their teams to support engagement strategies, so they enable meaningful engagement and enhance residents’ quality of life.

Learning Objectives:

  • List culture and team resilience strategies for moving to a social model of dementia care rather than a medical model with engagement as the primary focus.
  • Explain how meaningful resident engagement, a non-pharmacological intervention, is used as a social prescription based on residents' life histories, individual preferences, and abilities.
  • Describe how to shift the resident engagement paradigm, enable true interdisciplinary collaboration, and promote the concept of the Chief Engagement Officer.
