Multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) transmission is common in skilled nursing facilities (SNF) and can contribute to significant morbidity and mortality for residents. Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBP) is an approach of targeted gown and glove use during high contact resident care activities, designed to reduce transmission of S. aureus and MDROs. The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) have rolled out new EBP guidance for nursing facilities. Due to the increase of MDRO’s and S. aureus cases, long term care will see a rise in the need for EPB. This panel presentation will introduce the when, why and how behind EBP, and highlight how four SNF leaders have successfully implemented EBP programs in their facilities.
